Interviewer: So thank you! Well, with current water restrictions across California, Earth Day is a perfect time to talk about conserving water. This morning, we got WaterExpert, Dan Theobald, here with saving H2O. Dan, Water Man!

WaterExpert Dan: Thank you, thank you.

Interviewer: It’s good to see you man!

WaterExpert Dan: Yes.

Interviewer: Thanks for coming up with us this morning. We just mentioned California. Man, is it the awful situation in California where the Governor there has implemented some very strict water restrictions there about watering and everything. I mean. What solutions are people in California using to deal with the Drought situation?

WaterExpert Dan: Well some of the solutions are short term. It is reducing the amount of water that they use irrigating. Reducing the amount of water that they’re using for public use in water. They’re also local initiatives. They’re actually increasing water rates. The economy says that if you charge more, you will use less water. They’re also asking everyone to use less water. There are some other initiatives. Like for example, they’re trying to speed up the converting of ocean water or sea water into drinking water with reverse osmosis.

Interviewer: Are you surprised at all that that process, that technology, has not grown over the years considering … Given the fact that the type of water problems that part of our country is going through right now? There’s desalination units, but there’s not more of them. It’s not readily available.

WaterExpert Dan: Well, it’s a matter of dollars and cents. I would wish that we would actually put money into the projects. Either government or state supreme the projects. It’s very costly and that’s the reason why. But I am surprised that we’re not really doing more. Because we could. The technology’s there.

Interviewer: I’ve been told that here in the mid-west, we, in parts of the area, we set above an aquifer. Some states and some regions of the United States use aquifers as a source of water. Is that true? We use aquifer as the source?

WaterExpert Dan: It is true. The aquifer … It is true. The aquifer is the source of our drinking water and if the water gets contaminated, then that contaminates our supply. We also use the rain water and the environmental streams and we have to keep that clean as well.

Interviewer: All right, so what can we do as listeners here to help us conserve water?

WaterExpert Dan: Yes, I like to tell everyone, first of all, before you use water any water in your home, whether it’s your kitchen, your laundry room, or your bathroom, first of all, determine if you need to use water. Some things can be cleaned dry. So you can do dry clean first. After you start using water, then I recommend you actually reducing the amount of water that you use first. For example, if you’re in the shower reduce the time that you take a shower. If you’re taking a bath, reduce the volume of water that you’re using when you take a bath. If you’re in the laundry room, make sure you got a full load if you use the full load water level. Dish washer, use a full machine when you wash your clothes. You can even reduce the water pressure by using a half spigot valve opening instead of a full valve opening. That can reduce the amount of water each time you use it. You’ve just got to go through a personal evaluation of everything you do and figure out if you need the water and if so, use the minimal amount.

Interviewer: All right, the water that we do get. The quality water that we do get. We mentioned earlier that you have an easy, quick, simple way to test the water at home. What statement … You’re testing our water here at Fox 4. Here we go.

WaterExpert Dan: Well this is a water testing device. It’s a very inexpensive product. You can buy it easily. What it does: it measures the stuff you cannot see. It is the dissolved solids. It measures them in increments of millions. In order for us to have clean drinking water, we got to have less than 500 parts per million, which is equal to 99.995%.

Interviewer: Okay.

WaterExpert Dan: So if we have less than 500 in both of these supplies, this being our tap water. This being our bottled water, it’s set.

Interviewer: Okay.

WaterExpert Dan: So let’s just put this in. This top button here will start it. This would be your LED display and this is measuring TDS, Total Dissolved Solids. So you can put this in here. You can turn the thing on and you put it in …

Interviewer: How long will it take here to read results?

WaterExpert Dan: Instantly.

Interviewer: Instantly?

WaterExpert Dan: Instantly. You got … You see you got about 300 ppm here of total dissolved solids. That’s under 500 so our drinking water, tap water here is safe.

Interviewer: Now I always maintain that K.C., Missouri drinking water is pretty good.

WaterExpert Dan: Now let’s try the bottled water.

Interviewer: All right.

WaterExpert Dan: I lot of people were concerned about bottled water. And if you put this in here, you see that the bottled water is under 20.

Interviewer: Under 20. It’s 019. Very interesting.

WaterExpert Dan: And that is in parts per million, not in percentages.

Interviewer: Okay.

WaterExpert Dan: So, don’t be concerned. Your tap water is good, but your bottled water may also good.

Interviewer: Well it’s great to have you on the show Wastewater Dan!
